Welcome to the Cisco Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. This is an opportunity to learn about Smart Call Home, an embedded support feature available on a broad range of Cisco products, provided at no additional cost, with an active SMARTnet, SP Base, Unified Computing Support Service, or Mission Critical Support Service contract. Smart Call Home enabled devices perform proactive diagnostics on their own components to provide real-time alerts and remediation advice when an issue is detected. Bryan is a Technical Marketing Engineer in the Technical Services Product Management group at Cisco. He is an expert in the configuration, registration, and operation of Smart Call Home. He has worked at Cisco since 2003, as a solutions architect, IT manager, and IT architect.

Remember to use the rating system to let Bryan know if you have received an adequate response.

Hello Bryan, I wonder if the Smart Call Home supports a proxy server? Also, do I need a service contract to be able to configure Smart Call Home in my devices?

- John

Hi John,

Cisco provides an optional Transport Gateway that acts as a proxy server specifically for Call Home messages. The Transport Gateway is an application that can be deployed on a Windows, Linux, or Solaris server.

The Transport Gateway is typically positioned in the network where it can receive HTTP or HTTPS messages from devices, can access a POP or IMAP server to obtain additional Call Home messages, and can communicate with Cisco Smart Call Home servers over the Internet using HTTPS.

If required, the Transport Gateway can be configured to use a traditional proxy server to establish the connection over the Internet to the Smart Call Home servers.

You can find more information about the Transport Gateway in Chapters 1 and 4 of the Smart Call Home user guide here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/smart_call_home/user_guides/Book.html

Devices under a SmartNet or Smart Net Total Care contract can be registered in Smart Call Home.

Hello Jess,

Thank you for your participation on this Ask the Expert Event. Since the topic Brian is covering is related to Smart Call Home, he can't answer your question on VLANs, I recommend you to post your question at the LAN,  Switching and Routing to get a better opportunity to get your question answered.

Kindest Regards,

Hi Bryan,

What are some of the most common issues the team is seeing reported via Call Home with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.6?

Kind regards,

Mark

Good question Mark.

The Cisco Unified Communications Manager recently joined the growing list of devices that support Smart Call Home. The supported alarms for this device can be found at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/services/ps2827/ps2978/ps7334/SCH_Monitoring_Details.pdf

Because it’s a newly added device, there isn’t enough data to spot any trends. In conjunction with TAC, we continually monitor for trending issues in order to enhance the intellectual capital used in the Smart Call Home diagnostic and parsing engine.

hey you can use ACL on the router ... but first configure it with sub interace

Hello Bryan,

Do you know if Transport Gateway messages secure?

- Lisa

Hi Lisa, thanks for the question.

Yes. Regardless of the method used to send messages to the transport gateway, the transport gateway always uses HTTPS to securely deliver messages over the Internet to the Smart Call Home servers.
