Both Nexus 5000 and MDS 9124 has its own uniqueness..

MDS 9124 is pure fibre channel ports switch..with no IP ethernet traffic (only mgmt0 port is for managing the switch)

Nexus have 10g ethernet ports with FC expansion module capabilities.

8/4/2G or 4/2/1G  port speed for FC

-Nexus offers FCoE  & MDS 9124 does not..

-MDS has no LAN stuff ..Nexus does (both L2 and L3)

-Nexus 5548/5596 have unified port capabilities ..means eth port can be converted to FC port where as MDS is Pure FC port no convertion capabilities..

-MDS ---128 buffers per 4-port group (32 buffers per port default – 8 Km)   Up to 125 buffers to a single port (30 Km)

-Nexus -- 64 buffers per port (16 Km)

some of the features are common on both platforms such as

ISSU

NPV/NPIV

Link aggregation

so it really depends what someone wants to achieve in which area and features to get the capabilities offered by either Nexus or MDS 9124 switch...

Nexus 5000 will support the virtual tape library or tradional tape
